The matriarchal Gynarchy society deliberately inverts historical power structures to highlight uncomfortable truths about women’s treatment throughout history. By placing female characters in positions of absolute authority and male characters in subordinate roles, I’m not advocating for this reversal—I’m creating a mirror that reflects the absurdity and injustice of any system that dehumanizes people based on gender. The discomfort readers might feel witnessing the treatment of males in the Gynarchy should prompt reflection on historical and ongoing mistreatment of women in our world.
When a male character in my story loses his autonomy, name, or right to consent, these moments echo historical realities that women endured for centuries. The fact that such treatment seems shocking when applied to male characters reveals our cultural blind spots about similar treatment of women throughout history and in parts of the world today.
